Located just west of the fall line, by the end of the 19th century, this area had developed into a resort community – a place for city dwellers to escape the pollution and industrialization of rapid urban development. With elevations significantly higher than Richmond, and because of the distance (7 miles) therefrom, it was generally believed that this area provided a more healthful atmosphere; its name, french for good air, reflects this history. Today’s Bon Air is a census-designated place, located entirely within Chesterfield County.
